Materials & Care
What materials do you use?
All of our jewelry is made by hand in Minneapolis, MN. The materials we use most frequently are solid brass and plated brass, with plating including 24k gold and rhodium. We also work with gold fill and sterling silver, most often found in our necklace chains. Our earring earwires are primarily gold fill. We also use natural gemstones and acrylic accents in many of our pieces.
We recommend looking at the individual product listings on our site - each listing will include the materials used for that specific piece. Nearly all of our materials are naturally nickel free and hypoallergenic.
If you have questions about materials or potential allergens, just contact our team here and we'll get you all the info!
How should I care for my jewelry?
To extend the life of your precious new purchase, we have a few tips and tricks! Our jewelry is primarily made of brass or plated materials - and their care is different:
Solid brass that is unplated will naturally darken/patina over time. If you want to bring it back to its shiniest self, you can polish it with a silver cloth or polishing pad. Don't put any chemicals on it or use any liquid dip cleaners (like those used for sterling silver).
Plated metals (such as 24k gold plating or silver rhodium plating) are amazing and need almost zero care to keep them shiny - just like a very forgiving houseplant. Just wipe with an untreated cloth and you're good to go.
To keep your jewelry in tip-top shape, avoid things like wearing it while skinny dipping in the lake, rubbing it down with lotion or sweating all over it at the gym. If you do one or all of these things, see tips above for how to deal.
In general, don’t throw it at the bottom of your purse or toss it on a hard floor or countertop. Always store in a cool, dry place and take it on the go safely in a jewelry bag or travel case. Treat it like it’s special and loved, and it will love you back for a long time to come.
Of course, breaks sometimes happen - don't panic! Just contact our team here with a description (and, if possible, a photo) and we'll chat repair options with you.
How does the Build Your Own series work? How do I open the clasp to add/rearrange/remove charms?
The Build Your Own series features a unique chain with a threader-style clasp that can be easily opened to add/rearrange/remove charms - it's like a new necklace every day!
To open the clasp: There is a small bead attached to the non-clasp end of the chain. Just grab hold of the bead and slide the needle (opposite end) of the chain out through that bead. This will open up your design so you can easily add, rearrange or remove charms on the chain. When you are finished, treat it like a fun lil' sewing projects - just push the needle side of the chain back into the hole of the bead on the other side of the chain. Because of its silicone interior, you can move the bead to whatever position you like, allowing you to customize the length as well.
