Hibaaq Ibrahim

Hibaaq Ibrahim aka Moon Juice is a lifelong artist turned muralist, based in Minneapolis, MN. Flowers, plants, and patterns are her passions. She's incredibly inspired by the vivid colors and beautiful shapes found in local flora and fauna. In her opinion, one of the best parts about being a muralist is taking a client's vision and translating it into a work of art.

GET TO KNOW HIBAAQ!

Where did the name Moon Juice come from?

I woke up from a nap and the words moon juice were just in my head. When I started painting, most of my work featured moons. And I am literally obsessed with juice. Orange juice and watermelon juice in particular.

When you are working on murals what do you listen to?

I’d say I work in silence 60% of the time because obviously I’m insane. When insanity isn’t the vibe; I listen to audiobooks or lo fi jazz. Lately it’s been “Slow Jazz Music in Coffee Shop Ambience for Work” on Youtube. (it’s so relaxing)!

Why did you draw inspiration from mushrooms and architecture for this collaboration?

Mushrooms have some of the coolest patterns and colors in nature. They influence me to go bold with my color choices. Mushrooms look like they were left here by aliens and I love that! And art deco architecture is a major source of joy for me. The lines are just so good! It’s whimsical in a way even though most of the lines are straight.

If you were stranded on a deserted island, what 3 things would you bring with you?

Dallas. Maybe not a thing; but he’s from a town of 1,300 (so basically a deserted island) and he can hunt. My kindle because I love my romance novels. And my croc slides because they’re just so cute and match my kindle cover! These last two answers are why I would need to bring Dallas.

What's next for Moon Juice?

I’m trying my hand at woodworking! I’m transferring my design style from paint into wood. My vision is an all wood Moon Juice mural! It would be so cool if people/businesses had the option to take my art with them if they move to a new space? And I love working with new mediums. I’m forever a student of art.

What has been your favorite mural to date that you have gotten to work on?

My favorite has to be the one at A-Side Public House. It was one of my first commercial murals and the most challenging project I’ve worked on. I learned so much and without that mural, I would not have developed the distinct style I have now. A style that is represented well in the Larissa Loden Mural (another favorite!)
